Excerpt from The Camille De Rose Story In this book I aim to bring to public attention the yet un told core of the story of the Cicero race riots, their significance as a prelude to perhaps a world-wide race war, and the sinister plot which touched off those riots. The explosive elements were (a) the ever-present race repellants, real and imagined, (b) a town without colored citizens and colored citizens without living quarters, and (c) a group of colored incendiaries on the prowl for a chance to light the fuse. De ROSE, Camille

Lorne Bair Rare Books, ABAA

Rating

Book Description De Rose Publishing Co, Chicago, 1953. Hardcover. First Edition. First-hand (if unreliable) account of the 1951 Cicero Race Riot, which was precipitated when the author rented an apartment to an African-American couple in her otherwise all-white apartment building. In the chaos that ensued, more than 4,000 white citizens of Cicero descended on the apartment building, setting fire to portions of it and bombarding the Black residents with rocks and bricks. De Rose was among those indicted for the incident, and in this volume she presents her rambling, sometimes incoherent self-defense, blaming her misfortune equally on the FBI, the ACLU, and "a group of colored incendiaries on the prowl for a chance to light the fuse." Octavo. Red cloth boards; map endpapers; 348pp. Possibly a second issue - the tile-page is truncated (omitting sub-title found on other copies) and there is a replacement label pasted over the original publisher's imprint on title page. Tight, Near Fine copy, lacking the dustjacket. Seller Inventory # 32192
