Description:

Bound in printed brown paper wraps; 19 pages. Published daily at the Chautauqua summer camp for boys and girls in Clarinda, Iowa, August 9 - 16, 1916. Signed by Maltsberger and Finley (who, if our research is correct, was married in July 1916) below their photograph on the August 16 issue. The camps were the forerunner of the 4-H Club, begun by Jessie Field (The Corn Lady) in 1909. Each issue is two pages (except the final one, which is four), containing the doings around the camp that day, as composed by the participants. Each issue carries a 2.5" x 4" silver nitrate photograph of an original captioned drawing fixed beneath the paper's masthead (once again, except the final issue). Pages detached from the staples but all are present. The wraps show moderate edgewear and some soil; the text has a bit of edgewear with a spot of foxing to the lower edge of the later issues, not affecting the text. Ads for local businesses appear on the verso of the front wrap, the final text page, and both sides of the rear wrap. An interesting look into the doings of this Chautauqua camp. Scarce. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 125035
