Synopsis: The farewells of summer camp give way to the renewed acquaintainces of summer camp reunion where the campers find that much has changed in a short time
From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-9It's late November and for the campers from Camp Menunkechogue, all roads lead to their annual reunion. Alicia and Charles, camp nurse and di rector respectively, are planning a wed ding; teenage counselors Vi and Mar issa are looking forward to seeing each other and their summer boyfriends; flir tatious, beautiful Cathy wonders if any one knows of her involvement with a drug bust; and 13-year-old Claudia, whose divorced parents decided to marry new spouses while she was at camp, has fled to the reunion in search of the belonging that she misses at home. Add Heath, a young man dogged by the media on account of his father's criminal trial, and the gang's all there. After some nerves and awkwardness, the campers settle down to reminis cences that soon turn to revelations about both their summer personas and the people they have since become. The novel closes with promises to see one another again often, and surely at camp next year. The opening half of the book is devoted to background, includ ing camp flashbacks and analyses of principal characters. This does serve to build suspense concerning the inevita ble collision at the reunion, but this cli mactic moment is disappointing. The characters interact too randomly, and it's easy to loose track and interest in the goings-on. Marissa and the male counselors remain underdefined with personalities and motivations not as clear as others. Although things pick up at the end, it is never clear what the novel is intended to beit's not a ro mance, not a problem novel, but rather more a series of character sketches which leaves readers wondering what it was all about.Joanne Aswell, Long Valley Middle School, N.Y.
