Charles Scribner s Sons, NY. The author wrote this monumental work immediately after the war. As a reporter for the New York Times, he was an eyewitness to innumerable battles and personally knew many of the chief officers, who provided him with memoirs and diaries at the end of the war. He also interviewed many of the Confederate officers to gain their perspectives. Good copy of the 1882 hard back. Does have a cracked hinge and a little soiling on the spine. 660 pages.
