About this Item

ANDERSON, David. Canada: Or, A View of the Importance of the British American Colonies; Shewing Their Extensive and Improvable Resources and Pointing out the Great and Unprecedented Advantages Which Have Been Allowed to the Americans Over Our Own Colonists. London: J.M. Richardson, 1814. 1st ed. xxxi, 355 pp. Hand-colored folding map. Orig. cloth-backed boards with paper spine label. 1-1/2" piece lacking from cloth at top of spine, covers somewhat rubbed, hinges a little tender, still quite an acceptable untrimmed copy in original boards. Scarce, especially in boards. Map of the British colonies in North America. Anderson contends that the defenses being provided for Canada by Great Britain are inadequate and do not reflect Canada's worth to the mother country. Through a variety of statistics he attempts to point out the rich resources which Canada provides for Great Britain and the potential to improve those resources. Much of the work relates to what Anderson sees as unfair commercial practices by which the United States are given an advantage over Canada with regard to shipping and trade. In his preface, the author claims some expertise on the subjects he discusses, noting a statistical account of Canada which he is preparing for publication. Sabin 1391. Bookseller Inventory # 54111
