Full brown leather richly ornamented in gilt, front & back; spine decoration gilt; raised bands; spine lettering gilt; all edges gilt. 2 vols. in one. 128; 116 pp. Illustrated with 115 steel-engraved plates hors du texte; 2 title-page vignettes; 2 frontispiece plates. Text by N. P. Willis. Extremities and raised bands rubbed; narrow stain to bottom edge, slightly penetrating some margins; light moisture stain on lower margins of pp. 61-108, occasionally rising into text, but just; foxing to prelims and rear matter, and some foxing to plate margins; but otherwise a clean bright copy in tight, bright majestic binding with ALL PLATES PRESENT and otherwise bright. Later 19th century gilt tooled three-quarter red morocco over green ribbed cloth boards. Raised bands to spines. Some moderate rubbing to extremities, with some fraying to corners. Upper spine edge on Volume I just cracking. Marbled endpapers. 121 engraved plates in total, including 117 views, one map, Bartlett portrait frontispiece, and title pages. A few plates show some very slight foxing, but in all this is a remarkably clean and bright set with very sharp and crisp impressions. Text paper is evenly toned. The plates are good early strikes with little or no foxing William Henry Bartlett, 1809-1854, a noted traveller and highly skilled landscape artist, visited Canada four times between 1836 and 1852. He provided some twenty travelogues with brief texts. The prose text by Willis relates the history and current conditions in Upper and Lower Canada about 1839-40". - Canadian Scenery is considered Bartlett's finest production (Sabin). - "A very deep impression upon the pictorial history of Canada was made by William Henry Bartlett, artist and illustrator".
