217 x 141 mm. iv, 191 pp. Numerous tables, index. Blind-stamped publisher's pebbled maroon cloth, gilt spine; spine slightly dis-colored. Fine. FIRST EDITION. A substantial work on the canals of Canada which was later supplemented by articles printed in the Monetary Times, Toronto. Kingsford, born in London, originally went to Canada in the British Army in 1837. Upon discharge from the Army, he entered the office of the city surveyor of Montreal in 1841 and soon qualified as a civil engineer. In this capacity he was involved in the development of much of the Canadian infrastructure, including railroads, bridges, and more. His is most famous as a historian of Canada, a career he began in 1880, after being unjustly fired from his engineering post in charge of the harbors of the great lakes and the St. Lawrence at the age of 60 years.
