About this Item

First Urry Edition. Folio: [52],626,81pp, with engraved frontispiece portrait of Urry by Nicolas Pigne and title-page vignette of Chaucer's tomb, full-page portrait of Chaucer, illustration of the pilgrims leaving the Tabard Inn, and 26 equestrian portraits of the tellers of tales (including the Plowman) as well as two characters within the tales, Gamelyn and Sir Thopas (30 illustrations in total), all by George Vertue (see Reimer), with numerous head- and tail-pieces and decorative type devices. Glossary separately pagination, followed by Errata on verso of final leaf. Printed by William Bowyer, whose ledger records three sizes: 1000 copies demy [folio]; 240 royal [folio]; 10 writing [or super-] royal [folio]. Early full mottled calf, modern matching morocco spine in seven compartments with oak-leaf and acorn gilt device in six and red morocco lettering piece gilt, endpapers renewed. An excellent, wide-margined example with only intermittent toning to text, otherwise clean, fresh, and tightly bound. Alston, III 35. Maslen & Lancaster (Bowyer ledger) 779. Lowndes 426. NCBEL I 557. Graesse II, p. 127. Reimer, "The Urry Chaucer and George Vertue," Chaucer Review, vol. 41, no. 1 (2006), pp. 105-109. Unfinished at Urry's death, with final revision entrusted to Timothy Thomas, who wrote the preface and glossary "explaining the obsolete and difficult words." The first edition since that of William Thynne, in 1534, "to seek systematically to assemble a substantial number of manuscripts to establish his text . . . and the first to print texts of 'Gamelyn' and 'The Tale of Beryn', works ascribed to, but not by, Chaucer." (ODNB) It was, as well, the first edition that collated all published versions of Chaucer's work to come up with that closest to what was thought to be Chaucer's intent, and the first printed in roman type rather than Gothic black letter.
