G.F. Westerman, the Director and Founder of the Zoological Garden of Amsterdam, commissioned Heinrich Leutemann to begin a work on a monograph that showcased the cranes residing at the zoo. Most of the illustrations of cranes were drawn from life by Leutemann on location at the Zoological Garden. The completed monograph contained seven additional drawings done by J.G. Keulemans, as well as text written by F.E. Blaauw. Each beautifully hand colored image is accompanied by both the English and Latin name, as well as other common names for the bird, a full description of plumage at both immature and adult stages, and a discussion of habits.
