A statement by Philip Rooney: The Story Behind Captain Boycott; "As you know, the famous character who gave the word 'boycott' to the English language lived near the little village of The Neale on the lovely shores of Lough Mask, in County Mayo. Away back in the eighteen eighties when he was at the height of his fame, my grandparents were teachers in the village. From them, and from my mother, I had been hearing since I was a very small boy tales and stories of Captain Boycott and the wild doings at Lough Mask. I happened to think of doing a novel with a boycott as its theme, when a friend suggested that I write of Captain Boycott himself. Well, I read all I could find, and it was dry as dust. Then I remembered all the tales I'd heard as a boy and decided to tell the tale of Captain Boycott as it was told to me as a child. The result is this novel which treats the subject in a highly romantic manner but which is based on a solid foundation of fact.". Bookseller Inventory # 13498
