Synopsis: Relates the adventures of Toby and his cat when a storm sweeps their house out to sea
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-- While a thunderstorm howls outside, Toby has a fabulous dream in which his house becomes a ship tossing on the ocean, he is the captain, and his cat the mate. A tremendous octopus shoots two huge tentacles through the bedroom windows when a smaller, submarine-house manned by Toby's grandparents surfaces and fires a barrage of yarn balls at the monster, subduing it. After the house-ships dock safely in the harbor, Toby sets out again in a bathtub-dinghy to fish for breakfast and passes the octopus, now peacefully knitting. A clever premise is carfully realized in the illustrations but not so carefully in the text. Although the writing is simple, brisk, and suspenseful most of the way, the ending is lame, without a satisfying conclusion. The deep-toned, vibrant watercolors carry the action forward with humor and excitement. Toby and his cat are simplified, almost cartoon-like figures, but they are lively, expressive, and funny. The violence of the storm and its sizzling lightning tapers off effectively to a calm cobalt sea, with blocky houses squatting comfortably on its shore. With its tame monster, boy hero, and amusing plot, the book will show and tell nicely to young children. --Patricia Pearl, First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, Va.
