About this title
Book by Burgwyn, William H
From Library Journal:These two works provide a unique look at the Civil War through the diaries and letters of the men who served. Burgwyn's diary and letters are a wonderfully detailed day-to-day account of camp life and troop movements within the 35th North Carolina Infantry. He writes vividly of the battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg. After capture and imprisonment in Fort Delaware, he poignantly describes prison life. This is a well-rounded and fascinating war account. Upon the Tented Field is a compilation of accounts from four members of the 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. While they portray camp life in varying aspects based on the men's ranks, which range from private to major, the overall organization of the 300 letters makes following each individual's actions during the war hard to keep straight. When compared, the two works prove that whether serving the North or the South, a soldier's life was one of hardship, boredom, and a dependence on correspondence from home.
