First edition. Small octavo. [4, publisher's ads], 233, [1. blank[.[24, publisher's ads] pp. With four plates all with their original tissue guards. Publisher's blind-blocked blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, pale yellow endpapers. Comparatively light foxing for this title, the tissue guards have done their job in protecting the image but the plates are somewhat browned where the tissue guard stopped. It appears as if three signatures are sprung but they are still tighly sewed, mild extremity wear. A very good copy of a book often found in deplorable condition.Benjamin Franklin Bourne, a lesser-known but nonetheless noteworthy figure in American literature, is chiefly remembered for this one Gold Rush era book. His 'The Captive in Patagonia,' which provides a detailed account of his harrowing experiences following his capture by indigenous peoples of the southern region of the Americas. In this autobiographical narrative, Bourne recounts his capture (only he of all his trading partners was held) in Patagonia and vividly recounts the customs, lifestyles, and psychological impacts of his captivity among the native tribes of Patagonia. He was on his way to the California Gold Rush and eventually made it but like many others came away empty handed.
