About this Item

Third edition, 1858, stating "Fourteenth Thousand" to the title page, the first two editions being considerably harder to find. "Good" condition with considerable foxing/browning to page margins and an occasional darker stain -- the interior a bit unattractive but firmly re-bound and still easily read. Re-bound in gray library buckram with the original, ornately blind-stamped brown cloth from both boards laid down. New gilt spine titles stamped to black leather label. The full-page map and the other 14 called-for illustrations, five of them (including frontispiece portrait of the rescued survivor Olive Oatman, with chin tattoo) being full-page plates, are present and firmly attached. 290 pp. followed by 2 pp. "Notices of the Press." One of the more popular "Indian captivity" narratives of the era. Reduced from $700. Bookseller Inventory # 004911
