A very detailed Hand-colored aquatint engravings measuring 13” x 18 ¼”. While Sir Robert Ainslie was England’s ambassador to Turkey at Constantinople from 1776 until 1792, he amassed a collection of original drawings by the Italian artist Luigi Mayer. Views in the Ottoman Empire depicts, by means of vividly hand-colored folio aquatints, 48 views, originally drawn by Mayer, of the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, including Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Constantinople, Ephesus, Latachia, Tortosa, Samos and Jerusalem.
