About this Item

4to (234 x 176mm). [vii], 16pp. Engraved chapter head- and tail- pieces. Quite beautiful decorative boards (period or a little later?); (lightly browned, occasional spots, cracked at lower gutter; lightly rubbed). Rare. The Carmen Saeculare, choral hymn in the sapphic metre, was written by Horace in 17 BC at the command of the emperor Augustus. It was to be performed at the ludi saeculares (ësecular gamesí) by a choir of 27 boys and 27 girls. The mythological and religious song proposes the restoration of the tradition, the glorification of the gods: Jupiter, Diana, and Venus. Bookseller Inventory # 6499
