About this Item

A wonderfully detailed copper-plate engraved map with outline color of Canada and the Great Lakes by Guillaume De L’Isle published in Paris in 1703. Overall this map measures 26”x20.5”. It has been cut into 12 squares backed onto blue linen which fold into a portfolio. This map provided the most accurate rendering of the Great Lakes available at the time, with the lakes fully enclosed and properly placed in longitude and latitude. Despite some ambiguous details to the west, derived from Lahontan's theories, the depiction of the Great Lakes, their relation to Hudson's Bay, and of the rivers and lakes of the north was better than anything prior. An epic cartouche containing the titling and decorated with a beaver, indigenous peoples (one of whom is bearing a scalp), Jesuit explorers and centered with the French crown and coat of arms. De L'Isle was the best mapmaker of the period, enjoying the reportage from the French network of travellers, missionaries, merchants and military adventurers concerning their activities around the world. Overall this map is in very good condition with some light foxing and staining throughout. Bookseller Inventory # dk2031d
