About this Item

Engraving from the atlas volume of Duflot de Mofras' Exploration du Territoire de L'Oregon, des Californies et de la Mer Vermeille. Sheet size: 20 1/2 x 16 1/4". Frame size: 32 1/4 x 24". Inventory#: p1937pfat. This rare map is the best of the vicinity of Fort Ross, California, contemporary with the occupation of that fort. In the early nineteenth century, Russia made a concerted effort to challenge Spanish control in California. Fort Ross was established to the north of Bodega Bay in 1812, as the base of Russian operations in the region. The Russian efforts proved unsuccessful, however, and the fort was abandoned in 1841, contemporary with the visit of Duflot de Mofras to California. This beautiful map shows the California coast from Bodega Bay to just north of Fort Ross. Wagner calls Duflot de Mofras' work: "one of the twenty rarest and most important.dealing with the history of California". Bookseller Inventory # 001937
