[Spy novel] SECOND U.S. EDITION. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.187; [5], blank. Black vinyl-style cloth-covered boards lettered in gilt to the spine, grey strip to fore-edge with a yellow topstain, in pictorial dust-jacket illustrated by Jerome Kuhl, priced at $3.95. Additional and original Brentano's price label to rear cover. Edges and endpapers gently toned/spotted else a clean, fine copy. A full-price hardback reissue, published 17th January 1966. These editions appeared briefly in the mid 1960s and were easily outsold by the uniform Book Club editions. Second American Edition. This copy is from the comprehensive bibliographical archive assembled by Jon Gilbert, with pencilled note and ownership. These large print edition were issued exclusively to lending libraries and are virtually impossible to obtain without library markings. Publisher's illustrated softcovers designated 'Great Pan' series G198 priced 2/6 or 'X series' X232 priced 3/6. Contents clean, cheap paper toned as expected, light wear. Very good indeed. This was a transitional printing of the first Bond novel, in which a price rise and minor series revision was introduced. X232 has a slightly different copyright page setting, although both clearly state 'twelfth printing'.
