About this Item

Offered is an early copy in good condition of the landmark children's book, illustrated by the author in red and blue, 63 pp glazed blue boards with white lettering on front cover and spine. No dust jacket. Spine states "Beginner Books" and code B-1. Front cover circle with cat, "Beginner Books" in red and "I can read it all by myself" in black. There is no printing on back board, nor advertising or any additional information in the back pages. Title page has Rndom House in black letters lower right corner. Reverse of title page states "(c) copyright, 1957, by Dr. Seuss. Trade edition published simultaneously in New York by Random House, Inc. and in Toronto, Canada, by Random House of Canada, Limited. LC number 56-5470. Binding has three signatures. Cover is worn with bumps to corners and edges and along spine. There is surface wear to boards. Flyleaf upper corner states "To Alison From Terry Chris & Todd" in pen. On the other hand, binding is intact and interior pages are remarkably crisp and clean. Believe this to be an early and transitional printing of the Beginner Books, possibly as early as December 31, 1957 [an unusual launch date for a children's book] , which followed the very first 1957 Random House edition. It has the B-1 coding on the spine and the publisher is still identified as Random House. A review of the "Values for the First Fifty Beginner Books" piece by Linda and Stan Zielinski on their website, (which see), indicates that this is a volume of some significance, even in its "good" condition. Store Description

I am a book lover and collector with a literary education (which means I have not read Ulysses, but I have taken classes on it). I am a packrat and aficionado of fine and serviceable used items in the belief that it is time to slow down production and slow down our lives in order to appreciate and share that which already exists.
