Catalogue of 403 portraits from the seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth century, with biographies of the subjects (where known); list of artists represented in the portrait collection and list of portraits by each. William Sawitzky's copy (one of the leading scholars on early American portraiture), with numerous pencil annotations regarding attribitions, dates, etc. Several circulars on the Essex Institute and the Peabody Museum of Salem, dated 1926 and 1929, laid in loose. A pencil note in Sawitzky's hand indicates that only 125 copies were printed. Seller Inventory # 003931
