About this Item

4°, contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt, slight worming to upper joint, somewhat worn. Woodcut headpieces and initials. Some light browning. Minor marginal worming (mostly repaired) without loss. 267 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION, variant issue, without the licenses printed on the verso of LL2.In 1662 the irresponsible D. Afonso VI took the throne of Portugal, ousting his mother D. Luisa de Gusmão, who had ruled as regent since D. João IV's death in 1656. In November 1667, however, D. Afonso was imprisoned by his brother D. Pedro, who was named Prince Regent by the Cortes some months later and remained regent until his brother finally died (still under lock and key) in 1683. Pedro also, after a hasty annulment, married the French princess who had been D. Afonso's wife. To justify D. Pedro's ascension, Corrêa de Lacerda gives all the juicy gossip about D. Afonso's life, including the fever that left him partially paralyzed at age 3, his scandalous behavior throughout his adolescence and adulthood (consorting with prostitutes, breaking windows, attending dogfights), and his impotence-a serious problem to the new Bragança dynasty-which was used to justify the nullification of D. Afonso's marriage.Corrêa de Lacerda (b. Tojal, diocese of Vizeu, 1628; d. 1685), who had been one of D. Pedro II's tutors, was named Bishop of Porto by D. Pedro in 1673, and became a royal advisor as well.*** Arouca L6 (describing a copy with the licences on the final unnumbered verso of p. 267, and stating that there is a variant issue with this page blank). Innocêncio II, 271-2: calling for 267 pp. (i.e., with LL2v blank). Barbosa Machado II, 22-4: erroneously giving the date as 1679. Pinto de Mattos (1970) p. 216: issue with licenses printed on LL2v. Welsh 1143. Palha 3300: calling for 268 pp. Azevedo-Samodães 906: calling for 267, iii pp. (without citing the contents of the final 3 pp.). Ameal 697: calling for 267, iii pp. Avila-Perez 1982: calling for 267, iii pp. Not in Monteverde. NUC: WU, DCU-IA, NN, MH, ICN. Bookseller Inventory # 20987
