About this Item

First Edition, Second Printing in later dust jacket. 8vo: 444pp. Publisher's pale blue cloth, spine lettered in white, top edge stained tangerine, fore-edge untrimmed; blue, white, red and black dust jacket priced $5.95. Better than Near Fine, square and tight, with thin line of fading to top edge, light stain to back panel and several spots on top edge; in a just about Fine, completely unrestored jacket, with the author's captioned photograph (by Seymour Linden) on back panel, marred only by a lightly rubbed top edge. According to Publisher's Weekly, the fifth printing was issued with a revised jacket with blurbs on front and back, panel and review excerpts on front flap (as here). An excellent early reprint of the author's first book, one of the high spots of 20th-century American literature. Bruccoli and Bucker, A1.1.e. "Captain John Yossarian is a bomber pilot who's just trying to make it through WWII alive. But the only excuse the Army will accept for refusing to fly a mission is insanity, and if Yossarian refuses to fly, he is, by definition, sane. This is the self-devouring logical worm that lies at the heart of Catch-22, the story of Yossarian, his colleagues-who respond to the horrors of war with a range of seriocomic neuroses and psychoses-and his superiors, who respond to the horrors of war by sending Yossarian on ever more pointless and dangerous missions for the purpose of enhancing their own reputations." Time 100 Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB0827
