About this title

At Quiet Valley Quarter Horse Ranch, Sweet Lady gives birth to a foal named Catch a Winner, who plays, feeds, and is visited by a busload of curious schoolchildren.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-4-- After her birth in open pasture at a quarter horse ranch in Texas, Whinny plays with the other foals and naps under her mother's protective eye. Foreman Ted's crew rescues a mare which dies of exhaustion, in a plot similar in pace and tone to the "Billy and Blaze" series (Macmillan). Black-and-white charcoal illustrations are very much in the C. W. Anderson style of clean, sculpted horse bodies in ranch scenes. The story loses focus when it digresses to a school field trip and Ted performs rope tricks. Before the sidetrip, Catch a Winner 's content of quarter horse care and uses will inform the picture book audience and catch beginning readers' attention; after, it becomes an adequate second purchase. --Patricia G.
