About the Book

We're sorry; this specific copy is no longer available. Here are our closest matches for The Catcher in the Rye by Richard Prince.

Description:

First Edition. A pristine copy of this wonderful 2011 "appropriation" by New York artist Richard Prince --an audacious re-imagining of Salinger's sacred novel. Prince has replaced all references to the author with his own name and has altered the biographical information on the dustjacket flaps. The text of the novel itself though has remained completely intact --not one word has been changed. A tight and Fine octavo in a bright, price-intact, Fine dustjacket. And though it remains unsubstantiated, the thinking is that only 500 copies were issued. A very clever, in-your-face response to Prince's critics who cite "plagiarism" concerns. Book Description 2011. A pristine still sealed copy of Prince s most risky appropriation works. Book Description American Place, New York, 2011. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. [2011]. 8vo. 1st edition of this limited edition artist's book. Slightest rubbing to rear panel of dust jacket. NF/NF. 'This is an artwork by Richard Prince,' asserts the colophon of this familiar volume. 'Any similarity to a book is coincidental and not intended by the artist.' Coincidental or not, this artist book is a facsimile of an early copy of one of the most iconic and revered (not to mention protected) works of the 20th century, changing only the name of the author and altering the copyright information slightly. While the piece is obviously playful, the issues it explores--such as authorship, fair use, and copyright--are more serious, and once again Prince deftly pushes the boundaries of artistic expression (and legal codes). This is a fine copy of the first edition, reportedly limited to 500 copies. Bookseller Inventory # 2766934

Book Description American Place, New York, 2011. Book Condition: Fine. First Edition. FIRST (AND ONLY) EDITION, ONE OF 500 COPIES. SIGNED BY PRINCE WITH HIS INITIALS ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. The ultimate appropriationist book (or, "book sculpture"): Prince's controversial reproduction of the iconic first edition of Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. The front of the dust jacket is identical to the true first edition of Salinger's classic, except with Prince's name replacing Salinger's. (The rear of the dust jacket is blank as in later issues of Catcher). The book names Prince as the author on the title page and lists other works by Prince opposite the title. The copyright page contains the amusing statement: "This is an artwork by Richard Prince. Any similarity to a book is coincidental and not intended by the artist. Richard Prince". The text is, of course, that of Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. Prince initialed this copy "RP" on the front free endpaper. Because of copyright issues, Prince generally refused to sign copies - this is an extremely rare initialed copy acquired by a collector in person at a Prince event. New York: American Place, 2011. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket; custom box. FINE CONDITION. Original cloth, original dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 1918
