Synopsis:

Catharism was the most successful heresy of the Middle Ages. Believing themselves to be the true heirs to the true Christian heritage, the Cathars completely rejected the Catholic Church, and held their services in barns, fields, and people s homes.

Practitioners of vegetarianism, nonviolence and tolerance notably their liberal attitude towards women they gained support from the French nobility and popularity from the peasants and artisans. Their presence moved the Church to start the Inquisition and launched the Albigensian Crusade the first to be directed against fellow Christians -- which erased any traces of the Cathars. It was the first instance of European genocide.

This beautifully illustrated volume by the leading author on the subject unveils the mysteries surrounding the Cathars, their links with the Knights Templar, the Troubadors, and the search for the Holy Grail -- and draws stunning parallels with the present-day persecution of minorities around the world.

About the Author: Sean Martin is a poet, filmmaker and author currently preparing a book on the Teutonic Knights. He has recently completed directing and producing his third feature film. He lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Book Description Shelter Harbor Press, United States, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book. Catharism was the most successful heresy of the Middle Ages. The Cathars believed themselves to be heirs to the true Christian heritage, completely rejecting the Catholic Church and all of its trappings, and holding their services in fields, barns and people s homes. The Cathars gained support from the nobility in Languedoc and widespread popularity amongst the peasants and artisans. Their liberal attitude to women, who played a major role in the movement, was not to be witnessed again for hundreds of years after their demise. Alarmed at the movement s spread, the Church founded the Inquisition, and launched the Albigensian Crusade- the first to be directed against fellow Christians- which succeeded in exterminating virtually all trace of Catharism and was the first European act of genocide.
