About this Item

Small Octavo. 247 pages, with 244 plates and the folding map of the Cathedral that is often missing or damaged. Spanish text . Manuel Toussaint founded the serious study of Mexican colonial architecture in 1948 with his ground breaking study Arte Colonial in Mexico. In this major contribution of the cathedral in its various forms in Mexico, he established that though the European influence cannot be denied there was an evident "Persistence of the indigenous spirit" in Mexican ideas that caught the melancholy and resentment of the Spanish conquerors. Bound in blue cloth, lettering gilt over red block to upper board and spine, in pictorial dust jacket with some light edge wear and some soiling and private shelf sticker on spine. This copy has the name of George [Alexander] Kubler (26 July 1912 - 3 October 1996) dated 1954 of Yale who was among the foremost scholars on the art of Pre-Columbian America and Ibero-American Art.
