Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1861. 1st ed. 2 Vols. xii,217;x,96,12pp. 32 plates, 6 folding plates, music for bugle signals. Orig. blindstamped cloth, housed in custom tan morocco-backed cloth slipcase with inner cloth chemise. Light wear to spine ends and corners, Vol. One professionally rebacked, else very good or better. This manual was very popular with both the Union and Confederacy (where it had two printings). Cooke was a Virginia native and a West Point graduate. He stayed loyal to the Union, although his son, John R. Cooke, became a Confederate general. One of his daughters married J.E.B. Stuart.
