About this Item

2010. Hardback. Reproduction of: [The Census of Ireland, 1871 - Area, Houses, and Population: Also the Ages, Civil Condition, Occupations, Birthplaces, Religion, and Education of the People. Province of Leinster. County and City of Dublin.] The 1871 census is the first in Ireland to resemble what we would consider a modern census. Like the previous reports for Ireland it includes updated figures for population, land (size and valuation) and houses, all given in their total county context, and also broken down to figures for every barony, town and townland. The baronies for Dublin are Balrothery East, Balrothery West, Castleknock, Coolock, Dublin, Nethercross, Newcastle, Rathdown and Uppercross. However this report contains far greater detail about the population as it stood on the night of the 2nd of April 1871. The accommodation is classed from 1st to 4th in order of its standard. We are shown figures for hospitals, gaols and workhouses, ages of husbands and wives in relation to each other, people?s occupations, army and police figures, numbers of foreigners, numbers of disabled, religious affiliations, education standards reached, literacy levels, levels of Irish and English, and figures for emigration. All of these categories are broken down in detail, and compared with figures from previous census? As well as the figures for the county, there are parallel figures and tables for the city. Indeed, they provide the first authoritative glance at Dublin City, and allow for a systematic analysis of life there in 1871. Bound in modern cloth. Originally published in 1872 by Alexander Thom & Sons in Dublin, for Her Majesty's Stationary Office. . . . . Books ship from the US and Ireland. Bookseller Inventory # 9780857370617
