Description:

Presumed first printing of the first British edition. Translated from the German. Composed, printed and bound in West Germany. 11.5 x 9 inches. Medium blue buckram binding, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and to the spine. Gently bumped spine tail, and with fairly sharp corners. Very faint spotting towards top of binding, else an exceptionally clean binding. Textblock firmly bound in. With 176 numbered pages, and with white silk-satin ribbon page marker. With B&W drawings of 52 guls and a pull-out map of Turkestan. The map is in lovely condition. And with 100 full-color plates on semi-glossy paper, plus 19 monochromes. A bit of age-yellowing to all page edges, as is not uncommon with this volume. At the bottom of the front pastedown and the opposite FEP there is a very small light brown smudge, about ½ inch. Else a very clean copy. The glossy paper, full-pictorial dust jacket entirely present but showing its age. Some wrinkling, wear and laminate separation, especially at the DJ spine head and tail. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Osterrieth, Frankfurt am Main, 1969. Hardcover. Condition: fair to g. First edition. Large quarto. 176pp. Original pictorial dust-jacket over blue cloth, with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Ribbon marker. Tipped in color frontispiece. Illustrated with numerous line drawings, 100 striking color plates, and a folded map at rear, this work is one of the finest books on Caucasian rugs ever produced. In it, the author undertakes to deepen the knowledge and to locate the products of the various tribes and clans according to ethnological evidence and structural differences. He tries specifically to capture the beauty and artistic balance of old and antique rugs of Central Asia. The 100 color plates give the reader an idea of the treasures of past days as well as of stylistic development of rugs coming from a certain district. On eight pages, 52 various tribal "guls" are shown by which the provenance can be readily determined. Hans König gives a splendid survey of the historical and political background with attention to the way of life, religion and commercial aspects of this great territory which is flanked by high mountains and guarded by vast deserts. Dust-jacket partly chipped along edges. Tail of spine slightly chipped. Previous owner's name in ink on inside of front cover (Fred & Stella Krieger). Dust-jacket in overall poor to fair, binding in good, interior in good+ to very good condition. Seller Inventory # 37434
