Book Description Century Co., 1886. Three-quarter leather. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Single volume--six editorially complete issues printed from the original plates, bound without individual covers or advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, viii + 960 pages, three-quarter black leather over black cloth with gilt spine titles and decorations. A very good, clean, sturdy hard cover with moderate shelf wear, leather rubbed through to boards at the corner tips, spine leather significantly chipped at edges top and bottom; hinges cracked but sturdy and binding solid, paper clean and moderately yellowed with a previous owner's name on the front endpaper. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: 'The Century Magazine' was retitled from the earlier 'Scribner's Monthly' (thus the 'New Series' title statement) in 1881, with new management, under the editorship of the great Richard Watson Gilder, carrying forward its high standards for illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time.Leather badly rubbed along spine and corners. Very Good interior. Seller Inventory # 44828
