Illustrated throughout with illustrations from and facsimiles of HugoÕs works, including his first volume of poetry, Odes et Poesies Diverse (1822), his first novel, Han dÕIslande (1823), the title page for Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), stills from the Charles Laughton classic film, the book publishing HugoÕs argument to the United States government stating his opposition to the planned execution of John Brown, Letters on American Slavery (1860), a still of Frederic March and Charles Laughton from the Twentieth-Century Fox 1935 film of perhaps HugoÕs most well-known novel, Les Miserables, and much more. The front cover reproduces an illustration from The Hunchback of Notre-Dame showing a suffering Quasimodo bound to a public stake while the lovely young Esmeralda offers him a drink of water.
