Yet although it is illuminating to compare Chagall with the other great painters of his age, a deeper understanding of the man himself and of the sources of his inspiration is crucial if we are to appreciate fully the essential, spiritual character of his work. In this volume, the Russian critic and art historian Aleksandr Kamensky offers penetrating insights as he traces Chagall's personal and artistic development: from his early life in the Jewish districts of Vitebsk, the Belorussian country town in which he grew up; to imperial St. Petersburg, where Chagall studied art as a young man; to Paris, where he lived in the painters' community in the years leading up to the First World War; and back to Russia, in time to play a significant part in the dynamic art of the Revolution. Exploring the thematic continuity in Chagall's work, Kamensky looks at the way the artist developed an expressive and beautiful poetic vocabulary, which he maintained through a rich variety of media and styles. Chagall's imagery, always inspired by color and by love - which to him were inseparable -found its fullest expression in his early creative years in Russia and the new-born Soviet Union, before his definitive departure from his beloved native soil in 1922. The paintings, drawings, book illustrations, theatrical set designs, and murals of these fifteen productive years are examined in detail, with more than 400 illustrations - 192 in superb color. Also included are translations of articles written by Chagall at the time of the Russian Revolution, reviews of his work by the major Russian critics of the period, and extracts from the interview Chagall gave to the author in Moscow in 1973. A select bibliography, a bibliography of publications in Russian, an index of works illustrated, and a general index complete this important study.
