Front and rear pastedown and title page have a red inked stamp (a Triangle with an M in the center and a subtriangle in each of the three corners with a dot in the center). ; Lenormant examines the demonology and magical traditions of the ancient Chaldeansk, including the uses of talismans, the invocations of demons, spirits and elementals and the banishment of evil spirits and diseases. He also compares Chaldean sorcery to Egyptian magic, drawing parallels and contrasts between the two occult traditions. Traces the influence Chaldean magic had on the later Persian Magi and the development of Zoroastrianism. First English edition of 1877. 414 pp, followed by 18 page index. There is an interesting provenance to this book. The book contains the bookplate (affixed to the front pastedown) of Brother Edward Macbean, a member of Lodge "Quatuor Coronati" No. 2076 of London. Macbean was a Scottish Freemason The rear pastedown contains plate of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076, with a reference number and a Press Mark (v.2) in pencil. The book was first published in France in 1874. Editors note, dated 1877. Editor was W. R. C. [William Ricketts Cooper]. Green cloth covered boards.
