About this Item

First edition. Union blue cloth lettered in gilt andf blindstamped with military equipment design. 243 pp. plus publisher's ads, index. Appendix roster of the Union forces and order of battle. SIGNED DIAGONALLY ON THE TITLE PAGE BY LOUIS LIVINGSTON AND DATED 1882 (see details below). A tight, bright fresh example , narrow wear at the spine ends, all gilt bright. The most sought after of the titles in this series of first hand histories of Civil War campaigns, its collectibility doubled due to General Doubleday's (mythical) role in the invetion of the game of baseball. The signatory, Louis Livingston, a Union captain, was cited for gallant and meritorious service at Antietam and South Mountain and was promoted to the rank of Brevet Lt. Colonel for conspicuous service at Gettysburg. At the time serving as an aide to General Crawford, he arrived during the second day of the battle and was sent immediately to the left flank at Little Round Top. He is mentioned fas being on horseback and leading a charge as Union forces under Crawford, assisted in taking the location from a small but well entrenched Confederate force.
