About this Item

First American Edition. Pages 88 pp. + 4 pp. publisher's catalogue at front.8vo Brown paper wraps with black printing and elaborate decorative border. Double column format. Sewn First American Edition. Sabin 20004 and105032. Podeschi H491. Wilkins, p. 48 (with wrong date). NCBEL III, 822. Edgar & Vail, p. 20. Cushing, I. First published in 1843. This is an answer to Dickens' criticisms of America in his "American Notes," published in November,1842. The letters describe popular viewings of executions by hanging, discomforts of rail travel in Britain, urban sprawl, the glut of gin palaces in London, gentlemen murderers and criminals, English ignorance of America, and numerous other British failings on a "tit for tat" of Dickens' notorious view of America, occasioned chiefly by his resentment over America's loose copyright laws and the widespread piracy of his works. Originally attributed to Dickens, a note in Sabin later attributed it to Henry Wood, a Yorkshire journalist (Sabin) on the authority of the Library of Congress and Halkett and Laing. Published in same format as Harper's edition of "American Notes." The publisher's catalogue is dated February, 1843, establishing the priority of the Harper's edition in America. Lacks rear cover. Ends of spine wrapper (1.5 cm.) missing. Front cover detached and marred by two numeral stampings. Edges of wrapper chipped and corners worn. Virtually unfoxed. Internally Very Good, otherwise. This copy was distributed in England at One Shilling. Bookseller Inventory # 8969
