A Change of Plans is a collection of eleven narratives by women who have experienced hemorraghic strokes. The author herself experienced a stroke as a young girl. As she recovered and grew into adulthood, she thought deeply about the silence that has surrounded her experience and the psychic trauma she wasn't allowed to talk about. She also wondered about other women who had suffered strokes. Those who share their voices in this collection do so openly and movingly, telling about their experiences, recoveries and how the strokes helped shape their lives.
About the Author:
Sharon Dale Stone is Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Sociology at Lakehead University. Since the late 1990s, she has been committed to giving voice to groups of people whose experiences are marginalized in mainstream society and has published widely on the many issues facing women with disabilities. She hopes that her research will lead to a better understanding and awareness of the social dynamics surrounding both visible and invisible disabilities.
