Changing Gender Relations in Papua New Guinea: The Role of Women's Organisations
Available from more sellers
230 p. Includes: index, bibliography. This book brings to focus the changes--both historical and contemporary-- in the social relations between men and women in Papua New Guinea (PNG). It examines women's experiences of macro-level changes during colonisation and the consequent socio-economic and political changes. The difference, the author observes, is apparent in terms of the immense gender disparity which exists in all spheres of contemporary life in PNG. The book addresses both theoretical/conceptual and practical issues in politics, gender and development studies. It challenges conventional definitions of the "political", which, the author feels, covers a limited sphere. The emphasis throughout the book has been on women's perceptions and their actual participation in development processes. The study adopts a broader perspective to women's political participation, representation and an embodiment which contributes the necessary positive changes to national development. The book also provides a critical analysis of current practice and thinking about women's empowerment as a means for development in Papua New Guinea. 0.0.
