Large quarto. 206, [2]pp. Modern facsimile dust-jacket over original blue-stamped and lettered cloth. Frontispiece. American photographer Berenice Abbott proposed "Changing New York," her grand project to document New York City, to the Federal Art Project (FAP) in 1935. The FAP was a Depression-era government program for unemployed artists and workers in related fields such as advertising, graphic design, illustration, photofinishing, and publishing. A changing staff of more than a dozen participated as darkroom printers, field assistants, researchers and clerks on this and other photographic efforts. Abbott's efforts resulted in this book in 1939, in advance of the World's Fair in Flushing Meadow NY, with 97 illustrations and text by Abbott's fellow WPA employee (and life companion), art critic Elizabeth McCausland (1899-1965). At the project's conclusion, the FAP distributed complete sets of Abbott's final 302 images to high schools, libraries and other public institutions in the metropolitan area, plus the State Library in Albany. Throughout the project, exhibitions of the work took place in New York and elsewhere.Binding sunned along spine and at lower margin of front cover. Moderate to heavy foxing to the very first and very last leaves. Clear water-staining along fore-edge of pages (not affecting text or illustrations). Book Description E.P. Dutton & Co, New York, 1939. Cloth. 1st. One of the great photographic tributes to New York-- and one of the great artistic achievements of the WPA. The 1939 stated 1st edtion of this Berenice Abbott triumph. A solid working copy. G+ only in its original blue cloth. Happily, all of the iconic black-and-white plates are crisp and clean and Near Fine. But many of the pages, which had been stuck together for years, were roughly separated from each other at the fore-edges, creating some inoffensive abrading and light staining. Still though, perfectly serviceable-- and presentable. Quarto, text by Elizabeth McCausland. Seller Inventory # 8150
