About this Item

240 pp. What happens when the apprentice picks up the hand plane and begins to make split bamboo fly rods? How does life at the edge of the North Woods change with the inevitable passage of time? Author Kathy Scott answers these questions and more in Changing Planes, her newest journal of cane, fly fishing, and life, and the third of her books to be published by Alder Creek Publishing. Her first book, Moose in the Water Bamboo on the Bench, has become a classic among those who treasure split bamboo. Kathy Scott was nominated for the prestigious Rutstrum Wilderness Writers Award for her second book, Headwaters Fall as Snow. In Changing Planes, Kathy Scott takes plane in hand, learning the craft from her husband, David Van Burgel, an experienced, highly talented, rod maker. The nature of change, the changes in nature, and the inspirations of community are intertwined in the resulting engaging journal of their lives together. Making the rod becomes a metaphor for embracing the changes in life, changes where we find ourselves living on a different plane, still good, still to be celebrated, thought not always easy to face. Readers of her other books, will be pleased to continue her story; new readers will fins an outdoor world they’ll love to share: Maine, Michigan, Labrador, the conservation community, the community that is rodmaking today. Anyone facing changes in his or her life will find themselves in these pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 190088

About this title

Changing Planes is Kathy Scott's latest work, preceded by Headwaters Fall as Snow and Moose in the Water, Bamboo on the Bench. In this, the third of her journals, she intertwines the making of her own bamboo fly rod with sharing how her life has been altered by involvement in the split cane community and environmental issues. Anglers and Advocates are brought together by a timeless appreciation for craftmanship; in Changing Planes, she weaves her theme as deftly as she furls a silk leader.   Kathy Scott, like a 21st century, Lady Leopold, walks a different trail, blending nature with science, craftmanship with caring.

About the Author:

A dedicated conservationist, Kathy Scott is currently volunteering in Atlantic Salmon restoration with her husband David VanBurgel. They have chosen to live close to nature at the edge of the Great North Woods, sharing their ever changing watershed with moose, beavers and pups, Effie and Midge. When not in Maine or Michigan they are most likely to be found poking about wild places. Kathy's first book, Moose in the Water, Bamboo on the Bench, has become a classic among those who treasure split bamboo fly rods. She was nominated for the prestigous Rutstrum Wilderness Author's Award for her second book Headwaters Fall as Snow. Her writing is frequently seen in Midwest Fly Fishing, The Planing Form newsletter and Powerfibers, where her themes of fly fishing, rod making and immersion in the natural world continue.
