About this title

Synopsis:

Young homeless girls who sleep in Chanmas, a park in Port au Prince, Haiti, tell their stories. They speak articulately, thoughtfully, movingly. Their haunting voices fuse to become a single tale of abuse, terror, anger, and transcendence. It reads like an epic poem framed by the story of a trip to the beach where they are interviewed by "Gody," a remarkable, young Haitian educator. A frolic in the Caribbean forms a joyful counterpoint to their story. The stories are told three times, first in Haitian Creole, then in French, and finally in English. Photographs follow of the children who were interviewed as well as others leading similar lives.

About the Author:

This book is part of a series about children whose lives are hard. The organizer of the project and co-author with the children themselves is Robert Belenky, an American child psychologist who likes to travel. He has worked with, photographed and written about children in Haiti and Russia as well as those from his home country. La Chanson de Chanmas is the third book of the series. The first, Fragments of a Lesson Plan, was originally published by Beacon Press in 1971, and republished by IUniverse, 2004. The second, Camaraderie, was published by Xlibris in 2003. All of the income from sales of these books is to be contributed to people and organizations that are doing good work with children in the countries from which they come.
