About this Item

A Study of the Trading Post as an Institution. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins Press, 1891. Octavo, with original wrappers cased into hardcovers of library buckram. 94 pages, indexed, with12 pages of ads at rear. Original wrappers extended and re-margined. In all other respects a very good copy. Frederick Jackson Turner's (1861-1932) doctoral dissertation; an essay that showed the trend of his interest and foreshadowed his epoch making address before the American Historical Association in Chicago only two years later: "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," ".which outlined brilliantly the history of the receding frontier and its effect in creating American democracy. Little noticed at the time, it was to prove epoch-making in American history writing." (Columbia Encyclopedia). Bookseller Inventory # 8952
