Contemporary calf, gilt-stamped lettering in dark red leather spine label in second compartment (5 raised bands); complete set of 3 volumes, 8vo; pp. , iv, -364, 47 ("Several Letters"), plus engraved frontispiece portrait; 443; , 391, (blank), (index). A lovely edition, with (aforementioned) engraved frontispiece by Sim. Gribelin after Closterman, title-pages with engraved vignette, fine engraved headpieces and vignettes. The title-pages do not indicate a place of publication or printer, but the colophon at the end of the index indicates London, John Darby, 1715. Ownership signature of Mr. Geo. Turnbull dated 1726. Corners bumped; small spots of soiling on front boards of Volumes I and II; thin creases along spines, as tho once dry, but polished up later (this cataloguer's way of saying that the spines still look pretty). Some marginal browning, but overall internally clean and unmarked. Handsome armorial bookplate of Hugh Rose Young of Kilraick on front paste-down of Volumes I and III. Contemporary manuscript leaves laid-in, "Philemon to Hydaspes; Relating a Conversation with Hortensius, upon the Subject of False Religion," with a later pencil note saying "this is more than likely written by George Turnbull.".
