Book Description New York and Washington [DC]: The Neale Publishing Company [Walter Neale], 1910., 1910. First edition (not stated but with matching dates upon title and copyright pages). [2], 129 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 13cm. Lacks dust jacket. Black cloth with some mottling and staining; slight flaking to otherwise still easily legible dark orange stamping to front board and spine; slight fraying at spine head. Text block edges toned; top edge has some additional staining and negligibly shallow patch of bug damage near spine which fractionally affect margins; a few spots of soiling to interior pages. Supposedly issued with a b/w frontispiece portrait of the author opposite the title page but no evidence of such a leaf every being present with this copy. Binding is firm. A good+ copy of an uncommon Neale title. Contemporary racist ideas and stereotypes with a sampling of its fifteen chapter titles being: "Conditions and Changes in Freedom;" "The Negro Consumes More Than He Earns;" "Changes Wrought in the Negro by His Freedom;" "The Negro The Most Contented of All Races;" "The Carpetbaggers and Riots;" "Singing, Cornshuckings, and Religious Revivals;" "Miscegenation and Mixed Races;" etc. Bibliographical reference: Robert Krick "Neale Books; An Annotated Bibliography" #408.
