About this Item

Mid 19th centruy three quarter brown leather over patterned paper covered boards; spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Two different work bound in a single volume. The first, Charcoal Sketches is 1844, Phila., Carey & Hart; New edition with illustrations by David c. Johnston. 222 pps. Engraved title page and three plates bound in a front. A collection of satirical sketches of urban life. The second work, Mysteries of Tobacco, published 1845, New York, Wiley & Putnam. First edition. 185 pps. Anti-tobacco essays by a minister who points out (at some length) "The Nature of Tobacco", "Influence of Tobacco on the Body", "Influence of Tobacco on the Mind", "Influence of Tobacco on Morals", "The Illusory Influence of Tobacco", "The Filthiness of Tobacco". etc. The introductory is a lengthy letter on the subject addressed to John Quincy Adams and his (very much) shorter response expressing sympathy with the author's views. A tight volume, internally clean (although the pages of the first work are toned reflecting the cheaper paper used); some wear at the joints and tips, offsetting to the endpapers. From the library of 19th centruy New Jersey judge Thomas J, Carpenter whose name is stamped in gilt on the binding at the foot of the spine. Bookseller Inventory # E2159
