About this Item

First Edition. Pages 106 pp. + 8 pp. publisher's ads, dated March, 1858.8vo. Half tan calf with marble covered boards and blue coated end papers. A.e. speckled. First Edition. Appleton's Cyclop. Am.Biography. A classic play, in the modern style but patterned after a Greek drama. The subject is the end of the reign of Tiberius in ancient Rome, his excesses and his illnesses and his ultimate demise, despite his then moribund state, at the hands of supporters of his successor, Caligula. The historical features are derived from Suetonius and Caligula is anticipated as a savior from Tiberius's excesses, despite his ultimate behavior (possibly from mental illness). The author is Josiah Phillips Quincy (b. 1829), the grandson of the noted Josiah Quincy, orator, lawyer, Senator from Massachusetts, Mayor of Boston, President of Harvard and abolitionist. Other works by J. P. Quincy include "Lyteria" (1855) and a political essay, "The Protection of Majorities" (1876). Front hinge starting at head. Wear at edges of boards. Abrasion on front free fly leaf. Else, Very Good. Bookseller Inventory # 8743
