About this title

Synopsis:

No Charity There, now in a revised edition, provides the first general history of social welfare in Australia. It traces the development of official and community attitudes to demands and expectations. As Australia faces its Bicentenary in 1988 and struggles with the economic and social uncertainties of the 1980s, a survey of past action taken of behalf of the needy is timely. Using material not previously readily available, Brian Dickey analyses how Australian society has sought to solve the problems raised by a wide variety of vulnerable groups since 1788: the aged, orphans, single mothers, the insane, alcoholics and the unemployed. No Charity There is a carefully researched and intelligent study of a subject of ever-increasing importance.

About the Author:

Dr. Brian Dickey is a Reader in History at the Flinders University of South Australia. He has published widely in Australian history and is involved in a variety of activities designed to make history accessible to the ordinary reader.

Terms of Sale:

Private merchant account, no taxes on sales and a standard shipping fee in accordance to rates.

Shipping Terms:

U.S. Shipping:
We ship our books according to media rate through the US Postal Services. This is the cheapest way for us to ship you your books. We will contact you if shipping will cost more than the listed price. Please note that heavier and larger-sized books will cost more to ship as the general shipping cost is used for average-weight/sized books. If you would like your book insured, specifically packed or delivered faster it will cost more and you will need to contact us.

All our packages are wrapped in foam, bubble wrap, peanuts or a combination thereof.

International Shipping:
As a standard for shipping, we ship all our books in a Global Priority Flat Rate mailer envelope. This costs just a couple bucks more than ground and will get there in 4 to 10 business days instead of the one to two months it would for Ground. Priority in a box costs a bit more (about 17.50,) but has that added bit of protection. We're more than happy to ship Ground for $9.00 or Express for $30.00. Let us know what you prefer if the option isn't listed.

All our packages are wrapped in foam, bubble wrap, peanuts or a combination thereof.
