About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Burchfield, Charles

From Library Journal:

Art historians are usually forced to interpret an artist's life and creative output solely through fragmentary historical evidence and examination of the works themselves. Not so in the case of the American landscapist Burchfield (1893-1967), who left a highly documented private and public life. The thematic arrangement of excerpts from his lively and thoughtful journals, interwoven with 41 color and 131 black-and-white illustrations of his expressive landscapes, creates a deeply personal and insightful portrait of a well-rounded individual who drew sustenance from all of the arts as well as from nature. The editor provides a context for each of the topics via section introductions and has included such supporting materials as footnotes, a chronology, genealogies, and maps. An intimate counterpoint to the standard references, John I.H. Baur's The Inlander: Life and Work of Charles Burchfield, 1893-1967 (Univ. of Delaware Pr., 1982) and Joseph S. Trovato's Charles Burchfield: Catalogue of Paintings in Public and Pri vate Collections (1970. o.p.).
