About this Item

2 pp. Fo. A paean to Charles Dickens in a 1/3 column article in a San Francisco newspaper of 1873. Dickens is lauded for his capacity to see all in a distorted unique form of vision that replaces the heroes of popular myths with better examples from his fiction. Robert Buchanan (1841Ð1901) is the noted Scottish poet and literary critic, who at times published in Dickens's "All the Year Round" and was famous for his attack on the Pre-Raphaelites. This article is taken from "The 'Good Genie' of Fiction: Thoughts While Reading Forster's 'Life of Charles Dickens'"; it was originally published in St. Paul's Magazine, X, pp. 130Ð48, Feb, 1872. It was reprinted in Buchanan's "A Poet's Sketch Book", 1883, pp. 119Ð40. An extract can also be found in Philip Collins's "Charles Dickens: The Critical Heritage",1971, pp. 577Ð579. Very Good.
