About this Item

First American Edition. Pages 110 pp. + 2 pp. publisher's ads.8vo. Printed paper wraps. Double-column format. First American Edition. Illustrated. Podeschi H443. Collins, NCBEL III 828. The first American edition of a biography of Dickens rushed into print in England by John Camden Hotten just after Dickens' unexpected demise. Authorship is often wrongly attributed to Hotten alone, while Podeschi and Collins both give first billing to Taverner. The Preliminary Note is dated June 29th, 1870, while the American publisher's ads are dated September, 1870. A cover ad indicates the forthcoming September (1870) issue of Harper's Magazine. In the Preliminary Note, the author speaks conditionally about a possible second edition, "should one be called for." It was issued in 1871. George Sala's long obituary biography in the Daily Telegraph of London on 10 June 1870, one day after Dickens' death, was promptly expanded by Sala and published also in 1870 on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, rivalling this work by Taverner. Lacks front cover.Chips from ends of spine (entire printed title remains). Else, a very clean tight copy of a fragile item and (except for lack of printed front cover) Very Good.
